A Day in the Life of an Academy Prep Student
Academy Prep students are dedicated to thriving in a rigorous academic environment, and committed to giving back to the community. Just what do the students do at school for 11 hours every day, six days a week? Read below to learn about a typical Academy Prep student’s daily schedule.
7:00am – 7:30am: Breakfast*
Students arrive at Academy Prep and are served breakfast.
7:30am – 7:45am: Convocation
Students line up in front of the school by grade and gender, in height order. Students enter the school, one by one, shaking hands with the Head of School and greeting him good morning. Students all enter the auditorium and once again line up by grade and gender in height order. Convocation begins. Students, faculty, and staff pray, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and hear announcements. Each morning during convocation, two students, who have been chosen Student Ambassadors by the faculty for the week, practice public speaking on stage. Convocation concludes with the ambassadors leading the school’s pledge: Standing in this room are the greatest, most committed, most responsible people this world has ever known. If it is to be, it is up to me. Yes I can. Yes I will. Yes we can. Yes we will. I am, we are, the greatest, the greatest, the GREATEST!
Students then start their academic regimen, with almost all classes taught separately by gender.

All students who do not have an average GPA of 3.0 or greater are required to attend mandatory daily study hall until their grades improve sufficiently to remove them from study hall. Community volunteers and organizations volunteer their time as tutors during study hall, giving students more personalized attention. Additionally, Honor Roll students may wish to stay in study hall for additional help or to work on their homework.
Students participate in various activities from community service and museum trips to sporting events on alternating Saturdays.
Saturday field trips designed to supplement classroom instruction include: Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, the Tampa Public Library, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, the Lowry Park Zoo, Fort DeSoto State Park, Dali Museum, The International Museum in St. Petersburg, The Florida Aquarium, Hillsborough River State Park, MacDill Air Force Base, and many other opportunities.
11th Month Program
Our 11th month program, which runs the month of June, includes academics in the mornings and extra-curricular activities each afternoon. The session also serves as the final leg of the admissions process for 5th and 6th grades, as all prospective students attend along with continuing Academy Prep students. At the end of summer session, the new 5th and 6th grade class rosters are finalized.
In July, all newly admitted and continuing students are then required to read two novels selected by the faculty. The novels are reviewed with the students when they return to school in August.
